For example, the {8,3} tiling has edge more than twice as long as the standard HyperRogue tiling -- that means you definitely couldn't reasonably see 7 tiles out. They would grow much smaller, much faster.

A compromise might be a (6,6,8) tiling with two hexagons and one octagon at every vertex; that one has only a slightly longer edge, but even there, the areas of the cells are two or more times bigger!Marek14https://www.blogger.com/profile/14268540864211016151noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3845184064727726155.post-24614874101269367722016-02-18T15:15:14.268-08:002016-02-18T15:15:14.268-08:00Thanks! The amount of feedback on Vapors of Insanity remains quite low, so, at least for now, it seems more worthwhile to invest my time in other games -- they have more players and are easier to work on. Also, I believe there are several other games with similar goals as Vapors of Insanity, so it is less unique than my other games, and thus less interesting. So, at the moment the plan is to concentrate on Hydra Slayer, HyperRogue, ADOM, and my non-roguelike life. Maybe if the fans of VoI united somehow and showed their number? ;)

Creating a touchscreen version would be a lot of work, especially for a game with a complex interface such as VoI, so I think this would be extremely unlikely. Even developing the Android version of HyperRogue is something that I find very annoying...
Zeno Roguehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16264989425985464380noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3845184064727726155.post-46544199695635662762016-02-17T22:53:37.192-08:002016-02-17T22:53:37.192-08:00Thanks for your wonderful unique games!

On another side, it's clear that there aren't many "good" tilings that'll remain playable with a numpad keyboard (that is a matter of neighbouring tiles). Still, there are alot more possibilities, as can be seen in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniform_tilings_in_hyperbolic_plane . {8,3} "grid" may provide the first account of a roguelike where all eight directions are actially equal! Or, if this one is too simple, something from (8 4 2) column, that combines octagons and squares. Switching to different tiling inbetween worlds also may add to sense of alienation of player (just once he got used to the enviroment). I hope you will consider more exotic options - after all, Euclidean mode is already a thing.

And again, thanks for HyperRogue and Hydra Slayer RL both!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
